Pelgupaik Orhideesaarel / Orchid Island hideout

Kuuajase perioodi sees, mille Orhideesaarel veetsime, oli meil endale ülesandeks leida koht ning probleem, millega semestri jooksul edasi tegeleda, luues endale projekti. Külastades saarel asuvaid põldse ning aidates kohalikel rohida, avastasime sügavamalt puude vahelt hulga mahajäetud betoonhooneid, mis olid tänasel päeval taimedega ülekasvanud, ent siiski kasutusel justkui kuurina, hoiustamaks puuoksi, torusid ning teisi erinevaid tööriistu, peamiselt vanemate meeste poolt, kes ümbruskonnas töötasid. Koht oli minu jaoks intrigreeriv ning otsustasin seal enam aega veeta, mõõdistades ümbritsevaid alasid, hooneid ning tegevusi, mis seal aset leiavad.
Ajalugu
Orhideesaar/Lanyu on Taiwanile kuuluv saar, selle kaguosas, 2-tunnise praamisõidu kaugusel mandrilt. Saarel on eripärane kultuur, mis on hästi säilinud saare asukoha ning ajaloo keerkäikude tõttu, aga tänapäeval on üha enam turismi poolt üle võetud. Saarel on säilinud kaks traditsioonilise hoonestusega küla. Traditsiooniline hoonestus koosneb kolmest erineva funktsiooniga hoonest, mis liiguvad üha enam maa alla, mida privaatsemaks nad mõeldud on. Seda selle pärast, et hoida hooneid kaitstuna taifuunide eest, järgides ümbritsevat maastikku ning sellega ühte sulandudes. Ajalooliselt on saarel keeruline minevik, olles ülevõetud Jaapani poolt ning seejärel kultuuriliselt eraldatud olnud, misjärel aga Hiina ülevõtmisega traditsiooniline hoonestus enamjaolt hävitati ning asendati betoonhoonestusega. 50ndatel omandati saar erruläinud militaarohvitseride kätte ning et nn hoistada sõjavange saarel. Mu projekti asukoht kasutab ühte nendest aladest, mis rajati sellel ajal nendele inimestele. See asukoht loodi uue põllupidamise sissetoomiseks. Sõjavangid ehitasid teid, lennujaama, sadama jmt ümber saare ning kohalike jaoks muutus saar pigem vanglaks nende jaoks, jäädes ilma kõikidest õigustest ja otsustamisjõust saarel.
Varjualuse struktuur
Struktuur oli ette nähtud ühendama kahte hoonet omavahel, mida hetkel omavahel ühendab ning ka eraldab nende vahela suv betoonväljak. Üks hoone paikneb sellest madalamal tasemel, nii, et väljakule ehitades saaks see pikeneda tolle hoone peale katusevormi moodustades. Hetkel on väljak kasutusel varjualusena meeste jaoks, kui nad põllutööst puhkust vajavad või oma saadusi puhastavad, beetlipähklid närivad jmt, ning samuti see omab merevaadet läbi puudevõra(kalde tõttu). Otsustasin kasutada seda ala, ning muuta seda veelgi kasutajasõbralikumaks, ehk ka laiendada kontignenti, kes seal käiksid. Et seda teha, otsustasin, et võimaldades ajutist varju, mis oleks ehitatud bambusest, mis kasvad teeradadel, ühendades kohta ümbritsevate küladega. Ajutist, sest siis on võimalik varjualust tormijärgselt taastada vanal/uuel moel või lastes sel hävineda, juhul kui kasutust ei leidu. Varjualune peab pakkuma kaitset päikese eest, pakkuma vett, puhastamaks põllusaadusi ning joogiveeks, kui ka võimalust tuleaset kasutada, et süüa valmistada. Funktsioon võib muutuda läbi aja ka päeva jooksul, kasutades seda ‘htusel ajal kohtumispaigana, süüa valmistades, muusikat mängides või metsas pesitsevaid öökulle vaadeldes.
Bambusest teekond
Üks põhilisi osasid mu projektist on ka vana veerenni kasutus nüüd teena, mis ühendaks mu valitud projekti asukohta ümbritsevate küladega, pakkudes rahulikumat teed vastandudes saart ümbritsevale asfalt/betoon-teele.

During our stay in Orchid Island for a month-long duration, we had a task of finding ourselves a place and a problem which to solve in the current semester, creating ourselves a project on the island.
Visiting the fields whilst helping out with weeding for a local, we discovered ruins inside the jungle, which were mostly overgrown but were still used for storage for woodlogs, pipes and different equipment for mostly older men working around that area. I got intrigued by this place and decided to spend more time there and map the surrounding buildings and activities.
History
The Orchid Island or Lanyu is an island of Taiwan, situated in the southeast corner of it, 2 hour ferry ride away from the mainland. The island has a distinctive indigenous culture, which has been pretty well preserved because of the placement of island and its history, but is taken over by tourism nowadays.
It still has maintained two villages in the traditional style, where they have three buildings, which gradually get more underground the more private they get, having the main house underground, which protects it against the force of the often occuring typhoons, and is following the slope of the landscape.
Historically it has a conflicting past, having been taken over by Japanese and beign culturally sheltered from the outside and later on having the traditional building type taken down and replaced by concrete houses by Chinese.
In the 50’s, the island was made into an island of veteran military officers and then into keeping the war prisoners, My site is using one of the areas built for maintaining these people and maintaining the new type of farming they also brought in as a change. Prisoners built roads, airport, harbour etc around the island and people would say, that the island became more of a prison for indigenous people instead, having no say in the surroundings.
Shelter structure
The structure is intended to connect two buildings with eachother, which currently have a concrete grounding inbetween, having one building lowered in relation to it, so the roof area can become the ground. Currently the concrete square is used by men to get some shade and clean their crops, eat betel nut etc, and it also has a sea view because of the slope. I decided to make the usage of the space more comfortable and more friendly towards the other contignent as women and teenagers. To improve the place, I thought they could have a temporary shelter constucted with using the bamboo from the road connecting to it, being able to reconstruct after a stronger taifuun or decaying with time. The shelter should provide protection from sunlight, water for cleaning the crops from the field and yourself+to drink, and an oppurtunity to cook what you got from the fields. The function of the space could change depending on the time of the day, being transformed into a meeting place for all during night, cooking and performing music or watch the local owl during midnight.
Bamboo road
Main feature of my project was the usage of an old waterway tunnel, which were used a bit right now as well to follow by, as a road. I decided to use that to connect my chosen site better with the surrounding villages, having a separate, calmer alternative to following the main asphalt/concrete road to the fields and old prison cells.
